Michael R. Jackson Details How His Musical ‘A Strange Loop’ Touched One Fan’s Life
Music October 04, 2022
The Michael R. Jackson musical “A Strange Loop” is having a big impact on people’s lives.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” the playwright — who penned the book, music, and lyrics of the Tony Award-winning play — was asked if he had heard from people who have been affected by the production.
In his response to his Broadway co-producer Jennifer Hudson, Michael detailed a touching encounter he had with a theatergoer following a performance.
The man told Michael how he had struggled to discuss his sexuality with his family in the past. However, when the man invited his family to see the play — about a Black queer man writing a musical about a Black queer man writing a musical — he said it opened up a dialogue about his identity.
“Theater can reach,” Michael said about the magical moment.

“You wrote the whole show, but not the speech,” Jennifer noted.
“I got nervous,” Michael recalled. “When they called my name, [Tony producers] were like, ‘30 seconds.’”
When he got onstage to accept the honor, Michael said he “just started saying words.”
