“The Jennifer Hudson Show” is committed to highlighting and celebrating amazing people who have dedicated their lives to helping others. Take a look back at the inspiring everyday citizens making a huge impact in their communities who have been featured on the show.

DeJuan “DJ” Strickland is a 15-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri, who made headlines for raising over $15,000 to eliminate school lunch debt for students at his former elementary school. DJ launched his initiative, Team Tech Boy Lunch Heroes, after experiencing food insecurity in his youth. “Kids need to eat, and what they eat needs to be healthy,” he said. “Which is why this initiative is so important.”

Award-winning chef Keith Corbin was in and out of prison for 10-plus years before he decided to change the trajectory of his life. Through his soul food restaurant, Alta Adams, Keith launched Alta Community, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering communities through food with three areas of focus: vocational training, addressing food insecurity, and promoting Alta Adams as a gathering space for community members. “I think that connection to the love for feeding people is what I took from it,” he said. “You create community around food. That’s what I do in the restaurant.”

Devine Carama from Lexington, Kentucky, is a community activist and motivational speaker who was appointed by her city’s mayor to run the nonprofit group ONE Lexington, which aims to address and prevent crime among youths. He also hosts mentoring groups in schools across Lexington with kids who have been impacted by gun violence. “A lot of young adults are acting out because of suppressed and untreated trauma,” he told JHud. “We’re taught that being a man is keeping our feelings inside when really being a man is being able to express yourself.”
