24-Year-Old Changing Youth Mental Health Gets the Surprise She Deserves

At just 24, Marissa Garcia is already changing lives. As a Youth Mental Health Corps Navigator at York International, she doesn’t just support students — she truly sees them, helping them navigate anxiety, build confidence, and stay engaged in school as a near-peer mental health resource. #YouthMentalHealthCorpsPartner

For many, she’s more than a mentor — she’s a lifeline. Voted for by students, Marissa received the “Big Sister Award,” a reflection of the deep trust she’s built by showing up day after day, especially when it matters most. Recently accepted into graduate school to pursue social work, Marissa is just getting started.

In honor of her incredible impact, “The Jennifer Hudson Show” surprised her with $10,000, recognizing the powerful difference she continues to make in the lives of young people!

About Youth Mental Health Corps

The Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC) is a national service initiative working to address two urgent challenges: the growing youth mental health crisis and the shortage of behavioral health professionals.

The program places trained young adults in schools, community organizations, and youth-serving spaces where they provide near-peer mental health support to middle and high school students.

Youth Mental Health Corps has 800-plus members to date, is currently active in 11 states, and expects to be in 16 states by fall 2026.

The initiative was developed through a partnership led by the Schultz Family Foundation and Pinterest, working alongside governors and other state leaders.
