How One Teacher Survived—and Continued Her Calling in the Classroom
For 26 years, Rea Pead has poured her heart into her classroom at Grand View Boulevard Elementary in Inglewood, California — a Title I school where many students face daily challenges beyond academics. But to Rea, teaching has never been just a job. It’s a calling, one shaped by her own story. A single mother who raised two daughters while dedicating her life to education, Rea goes above and beyond for her students — her “kids,” as she lovingly calls them. Whether it’s buying classroom supplies, snacks, or even birthday gifts out of her own pocket, she shows up for them in ways that extend far beyond the curriculum. Her passion is deeply personal. Growing up, Rea didn’t always feel supported, but a fellow teacher made her feel seen and inspired her to become that same safe place for others. Today, she reminds her students every day that she’s proud of them, making sure they hear the words she once needed most. In 2022, Rea faced a devastating diagnosis: congestive heart failure, with less than a year to live. She stepped away from the classroom to fight for her life, but by the grace of God, she survived. Now, with improved health, she’s back doing what she loves, embracing every day as a gift. Her story of strength and selflessness touched many — including Eyemart Express, who surprised Rea and her students with new glasses and $10,000 to support her classroom. Rea’s story is a true reminder that when one person chooses to lead with love and a clear vision of what is possible, it doesn’t just change a classroom — it changes lives for generations.
